The Youth In Us 15Sep04

Now online at www.TheYouthInUs.com, Joshua Leonard’s narrative directorial debut.

Originally called “Into The Woods,” only recently did the title change, for many reasons; much for relevance of content, and also to discourage an association of Josh in the “woods,” of which Blair Witch is quite sufficient.

My introduction to “Into The Woods” began this past Spring when during production of “The Strand.” As the usual insomnia would have it, in needing something to slow me down before some late night kip – Josh, who was on set that day, left behind a stack of scripts on the coffee table in our house.

I took the script to bed to have a quick read (being a script for a short film) without any preconceived expectations, though what resulted in reading the script effected me to the point of tears.

The following morning I called Josh to let him know I’d read it and how impressed I was. Long story short, a site was decided upon and we got busy.

By coincidence, they were filming the final scenes that weekend and Josh asked me to come to the sound stage. Upon arrival, Josh was midflight in direction and the crew were everywhere in getting it right for the limited time they had. Interestingly, the set itself displayed all that lingered in my imagination from the reading. Now, to see how the camera revealed the story.

When I’d made the prototype for the site the next week, Josh’s reaction was staunch that our head’s are tight and in sync and that it was a keeper. Since then, through agonizing and painstaking editing, we have a rough cut of the DVD, and the site is now online.

If the site does half the job the film does, then our instincts are spot on and we’ll have done our job right I should think.
