Conversations 14Nov05

Josh Candleman is a small-town mortician who is more comfortable speaking with his dead clients than he is talking with the living.

Lucky for Josh, they talk back.

In an effort to find relaxing and engaging conversation, Josh begins killing people with whom he’d like to talk.

But the conversation is never that good, and the dead tell him things he doesn’t want to hear, like that the whole town suspected him of murder all along.

Josh is torn as he tries to reconcile his need for inner peace with his need to not be caught for his crimes, as his guilt gnaws away at him.

Erosion 27Sep05

Haunted by a failing relationship, Gabe (Emmanuel Xuereb) devises a risqué game for escape. He invites Irene (Charis Michelsen) to dinner at a lavish mansion.

Unhappily married, Irene finds the temptation irresistible when Gabe invites her on a second date. To her surprise, she meets him at a humble suburban home.

Playfully, Gabe admits that he broke into both houses for their trysts. A frightened Irene returns to her husband.

Unable to make peace with his past, Gabe escalates his pursuit of Irene, who ultimately surrenders to the thrill of abandoning her life and having sex with Gabe in strangers’ homes.

House after house they push the limits, defying reality by living stolen lives. But is there really an escape from life? And how far can they go before their past catches up with them?

The Sundance Film Festival… 29Nov04

We made it. A little over a month ago Josh and I announced (with crossed fingers) the submission of The Youth In Us to the Sundance Film Festival.

Now… we can announce the acceptance.

Film selections will be announced at the www.sundance.org this week.

The Youth In Us – Sundance? 15Oct04

Josh has submitted The Youth In Us to the Sundance Film Festival. The less I say, the less I risk a jinx.

Cross any and all appendages to spare.

The Youth In Us 15Sep04

Now online at www.TheYouthInUs.com, Joshua Leonard’s narrative directorial debut.

Originally called “Into The Woods,” only recently did the title change, for many reasons; much for relevance of content, and also to discourage an association of Josh in the “woods,” of which Blair Witch is quite sufficient.

My introduction to “Into The Woods” began this past Spring when during production of “The Strand.” As the usual insomnia would have it, in needing something to slow me down before some late night kip – Josh, who was on set that day, left behind a stack of scripts on the coffee table in our house.

I took the script to bed to have a quick read (being a script for a short film) without any preconceived expectations, though what resulted in reading the script effected me to the point of tears.

The following morning I called Josh to let him know I’d read it and how impressed I was. Long story short, a site was decided upon and we got busy.

By coincidence, they were filming the final scenes that weekend and Josh asked me to come to the sound stage. Upon arrival, Josh was midflight in direction and the crew were everywhere in getting it right for the limited time they had. Interestingly, the set itself displayed all that lingered in my imagination from the reading. Now, to see how the camera revealed the story.

When I’d made the prototype for the site the next week, Josh’s reaction was staunch that our head’s are tight and in sync and that it was a keeper. Since then, through agonizing and painstaking editing, we have a rough cut of the DVD, and the site is now online.

If the site does half the job the film does, then our instincts are spot on and we’ll have done our job right I should think.

Online Memorial 23Aug04

In talks with Matt Compton and others involved, and considering the scope of the situation, we decided if it could be done, an Online Memorial for Neal Fredericks might be appropriate.

“Might” fast turned to “is” and “if” fast turned to “will.”

Thus I went to work immediately, creating as best I could (under the limited time frame) an alternate that would run parallel at the same moment for those who could not physically attend the service in California this past friday at noon pacific time.

This particular work differed so greatly from all others, it proved a massive challenge and risked a great fear in doing so (on my part), in that – unlike all other works – mind for the No War Series – I did not want to create a piece that was “entertaining” or anything within that scope. Nor did I want this piece to make a “statement,” yet rather offer the opportunity for the user to adopt their own statement and their own needs to be there, differing none from the physical service in tha respect.

Over 300+ attended the physical service, over 1,000 attended to Online Service. It proved worthy to do.

That Online Memorial remains online until we decide its long term fate, likely to be archived.

Meanwhile, we also launched a campaign to fund full-page memorial ads in Variety Magazine, American Cinematographer and the Hollywood Reporter. This also proved worthy, having raised sufficient funds to do so within a matter of hours. 100% of the remaining balance is to go towards the Neal Fredericks Memorial Scholarship, now being established at Neal’s Alma Mater.

The Variety and Hollywood Reporter ads are running today, Monday the 23rd.

Director Ann Lu has contacted me about screening Erosion, the last film completed and had collaborated with her, and is in part based on their life together. Post production completed a month ago and has yet had a public screening. Producer Peiti Feng has contacted the American Society of Cinematographers for assistance with reactions being positive from the start.

Updates on this coming later this week.
